What valuable lessons have you learned lately?

Busy, busy, busy

When did life get so busy? Yesterday was the first day in a couple of weeks that I didn't have a million things I had to do.

We did some home schooling, I started putting things on Ebay, I actually sat down for a cup of coffee instead of drinking it on the go.

It was a good day!

Today will be the same. We normally head to the park on Fridays for our local home school co-op, but I'm thinking there won't be too many people there today since it's been raining every day for a week.

Instead I will be here making cookies.

My daughter has an early out-of-town volleyball game, so we'll have to skip Art today as well in order to make it to her game on time.

I'm just curious... What do you do when your husband goes out of town? Do you throw a party or do you make your kids sleep in your bed so you're not all alone?

Normally I (try to) do the latter, but since my daughter is the only one that will keep me company and she is going to be gone tomorrow night as well, I've invited a friend over. She and I don't get much time to visit without all of our kiddos around, so it will be nice.

Laughter is the best medicine

One of the things I love about my husband is that he makes me laugh. A lot.

In fact, I appreciate that in all of my relationships.

I actually look forward to spending time with certain people because I know there will be lots of laughter when we're together.

Here's what's tickled me lately:

I laughed at Oprah today when she was showing her favorite viewer surprises. (Actually I laughed at Tom Cruise's number one fan. Hysterical!)

I laughed at my youngest son when he tried to fake a stomachache to get out of doing school work today.

Watching Bonnie Hunt always makes me laugh.

I laughed while reading Fried Green Tomatoes, and I laughed at myself when I forgot what book I announced was our book club book for the month. (I had to order it and couldn't find the e-mail telling everyone it's title.)

Proverbs 17:22 says, "A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person's strength."

Obviously, being happy (which I know is a choice) is important. What are you laughing at these days?

Books in my life this week

This is the one I just finished reading. It was very strange, but it was a great story. What I took away from it was how deeply unforgiveness can hurt us, and how foolish it is to hold on to it for very long, much less for a lifetime. I will definitely read more from this author.

These are two of my daughter's college books for this semester that I just paid way more for than I wanted to. I realize they are necessary, but wow! I guess this is only the beginning.

A friend of mine borrowed these and returned them to me on Friday. Two very sweet (no pun intended) books, and I am looking forward to the third in this series coming out this fall.

Of course, the most important book. Lately I've been reading a lot of Psalms. Remembering how important it is to praise His name and thank Him for what He's done in my life, rather than always asking for what I think I need. He always knows best.

This is what I'm reading now. The movie is one of my favorite movies of all times, but I've never read the book. I know I will zip through it pretty quickly, and I'll probably buy a copy of it for myself. (I'm borrowing this one from a friend.)

This is our church book club book for September. Mine is in the mail, and hopefully I'll be able to start on it this week. Normally I try to read a book for our club before I even give out the title, but I've been slacking lately. (Sorry, ladies.) As I get into a routine around here with school I hope to find more time to read like I used to.

My school year so far

Well, it's going just fine. Thanks for asking.

My daughter is doing great, though I believe she has a mild case of senioritis. Volleyball is going well, she's having fun with her friends, but work? Not her favorite thing right now.

Of course the boyfriend might have something to do with that.

My middle child-- my oldest son-- is THRIVING in public school. Watching him this past week and a half has been seeing God in action, and I am not even exaggerating. Every day he has told me something that has happened at school that has made my heart swell or made me laugh.

God is faithful, folks!

My youngest son and I have been having a ball running the roads and spending time together. He loves, loves, loves listening to music. So when we get in the car I hand him my iPod and the cord that he plugs in to listen to my songs on the stereo, and he is in heaven. Of course he tends to play the same songs over and over again, but that's ok.

His favorites are Summer Nights from Grease, Chicken Fried by the Zac Brown Band, and You're Gonna Miss This by Trace Atkins. (Don't ask me why he likes the last one. I have no clue! Maybe he likes to see me cry.)

He started a new curriculum today that is performed all on the computer. I really think he's going to like it. He was actually excited about school when I told him he could do it on the computer, so we'll see how it goes. I like it because it sets everything up for me, and I can set the school calendar just like I want it.

No school on Monday, woo hoo!

Tomorrow we will watch my daughter's volleyball games in her tournament and do our school in the afternoon. I'm looking forward to the special day.
